Last February, Michael Oher was waived by the Tennessee Titans, one of the NFL’s worst teams, this after getting let go by the Baltimore Ravens, with whom he had won a Super Bowl two years previously. Now he’ll have a chance to win another Super Bowl ring, this time as a member of the Carolina Panthers, who took a chance on the offensive tackle’s ability to protect star quarterback Cam Newton.
Sounds like the makings of a movie, right? If that happens, though, it would only serve as a sequel to “The Blind Side,” the 2009 film which chronicled Oher’s impoverished childhood and adoption by a family in Tennessee, culminating in him becoming a first-round draft pick.
On Sunday, Oher was relishing his season of redemption, following the Panthers’ 49-15 rout of the Arizona Cardinals in the NFC championship game. And it was a moment joyously shared with him by Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy, his adoptive parents.
Tuohy was portrayed in the movie by Sandra Bullock, who won an academy award for her performance. However, Oher has said that he does not actually like the film, which he claims essentially dumbed him down and gave his adoptive family too much credit for his development as a football player.
“People look at me, and they take things away from me because of a movie,” Oher said in June. “They don’t really see the skills and the kind of player I am. That’s why I get downgraded so much, because of something off the field.”
“This stuff, calling me a bust, people saying if I can play or not,” he continued, “that has nothing to do with football. It’s something else off the field. That’s why I don’t like that movie.”
